Bed Buying Guide
There are many types of beds you can buy from adjustable beds to antique style beds to suit all pockets.
Bedframes may be either a divan or bedstead type. A divan consists of a boxed structure, usually fabric covered and often having space beneath for storage.
Bedsteads come in lots of different styles and materials with either rigid or flexible wooden slats being the most common support for the mattress.
There are four main types of divan:
- Sprung-edge divans have a complete open coil or pocket spring unit mounted on a frame and they provide even support across the whole mattress.
- Solid or platform-top divans have a rigid, usually hardwood, top panel making them generally firmer than sprung bases.
- Firm-edge divans have a smaller number of larger, heavy-duty springs within a rigid frame.
- Flexible slatted divans use laminated soft woods mounted in a frame to provide some springiness.
